Budi & Dian Wedding Page

Indonesia has a very diverse culture. It is estimated that there are more than 300 culture and languages in Indonesia. Wedding in Indonesia is influenced by the culture of the families involved. Yes, wedding in Indonesia is not only a tie between two people, but it is also a tie between two families. In this book, we want to show you our wedding pictures.

Budi Rahardjo has a Javanese background (middle Java, to be exact), whereas Dian Rahayu has a Palembang (almost South part of Sumatra) background. Most of the weddings in Indonesia are determined by the culture of the bride. Thus, in our situation we have a Palembang-style wedding.

The wedding picture on the left shows us in a traditional Palembang wedding dress. (Picture of Budi&Dian, and Budi's parents, brother, sisters, and brother in law.) The dress is supposed to be made of gold. The crowns were heavy. By the end of the day, our heads were pounding. Maybe because we were not used to them. Or maybe because we were hungry, too busy to eat at that time. The wedding reception was done in Medan, a city in North Sumatra, in 1989. Prior to the reception, the actual and formal wedding ceremenoy was done in a nearby mosque. Friends, families, relatives were there to witness it. (We will have more pictures in the next update.)

After the Palembang wedding, we went to Bandung and had another wedding reception. Yes, we had two wedding receptions. This time we wore Central Java wedding dress. (See picture on the right.) Fortunately, Budi's mother is a famous "perias pengantin", a professional person who does the makeup and perform the traditional wedding ceremony. She also owns and rents the dresses.
